As part of their ongoing Community Health Nursing immersion, Level 4 nursing students from the University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (UC CONAHS) conducted a school nursing session at the local daycare center in Barangay Pongayan, Kapangan, Benguet on February 24, 2026, during the second week of their community duties.
The activity, organized by Level 4M-C students under the supervision of Clinical Instructor Mr. Laudemar Luis, consisted of a feeding program, distribution of school supplies, and a hygiene clinic for daycare children. The initiative aimed to address the nutritional needs of the children, provide essential learning materials, and identify common health issues while promoting proper hygiene practices.
During the activity, the nursing students prepared and served nutritious meals to the children, helping support their daily nutritional intake and overall well-being. School supplies were also distributed to assist the children in their early learning activities at the daycare center. To make the health teaching engaging and age-appropriate, the students used interactive games and coloring books to demonstrate proper handwashing and personal hygiene practices.
A short hygiene clinic was also conducted where the students performed head and nail assessments to identify common health concerns among the children, including pediculosis (lice infestation) and other hygiene-related issues. The findings were properly documented to facilitate possible referral and follow-up interventions within the community.
This initiative highlights the role of school health nursing in promoting preventive care and child wellness, while allowing UC CONAHS nursing students to apply their clinical skills in a real community setting. Activities like this continue to strengthen the university’s commitment to Community Organizing Participatory Action Research (COPAR) and meaningful community engagement in Barangay Pongayan.
